Bicycle Helmets

The majority of bike accidents do NOT involve cars. Most are a result of falls. Falls can occur in the street, driveway or park - anywhere at anytime. A child on a bike always needs the protection of a helmet, so it is very important that your child wear a properly fitting helmet every time they ride a bike.

In order to ensure that children in our community have access to affordable bicycle helmets the Hazelwood Fire Department sells and fit bicycle helmets for $8.00. This service is available Monday - Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 6800 Howdershell Road.

bike safety

The City of Hazelwood enacted a helmet ordinance requiring the use of protective headgear which meets or exceeds the impact standard for protective bicycle helmets set by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission federal safety standards, those developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), the Snell Memorial Foundation or the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM). Every person under the age of seventeen (17) years operating or being a passenger on a bicycle or using a scooter, in-line skates, roller skates or a skateboard shall wear a bicycle helmet of good fit, fastened securely upon the head with the straps of the helmet.
